China’s Global Engagement: Fresh Perspectives on Geopolitics
Amid rising geopolitical tensions and growing challenges to the liberal, rules-based international order, are new opportunities opening for China to fill gaps, reshape institutions, and redefine forms of global cooperation? Although China’s influence is felt worldwide and prominent in daily news coverage, its global engagement is less often examined on the ground - where it is practiced, negotiated, contested, and continually reshaped.
Three renowned scholars share and discuss fresh empirical insights that move beyond the usual headlines and familiar thematic frames. Drawing on expertise in and from different world regions, the panel will explore a range of dynamics in China’s global engagement, including China’s diverse relationships with the Global South and development cooperation; the everyday activities of Chinese companies along the Belt and Road; China’s role in climate governance and resource commodification; and the country’s increasingly outward-oriented activities in scientific research and technology development.
The discussion is open to anyone interested in China and will be held in English.
